UFC 1
Introduction: UFC 1 is the other name for Ultimate Fighting Championship: the Beginning. This is largely due to the fact that it was the 1st MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) occasion which was undertaken by the UFC. On 12th November 1993, the first fight was held in the city of Denver in Colorado on the McNichols Sports Arena. The fight was a live telecast on the pay per view channels. After a particular period, the sport was also introduced on the home video medium. The format of the UFC 1 tournament comprised of 8 fighters and the winner who triumphs was awarded with $ 50,000. UFC 1 did not have any specifications with respect to the weight limits or classes. In fact, there was no time limit for the matches and hence no judge was appointed for night matches. A person can win the UFC 1 match either by way of knockout, throwing away the towel or submission. About Significant Events: Although the UFC 1 primarily projected itself as having no rules constraints, fighters witnessed that there were restrictions on what could be done by them. They were restricted from biting or even eye wringing. The UFC 1 champion was Royce Gracie, who beat down Gerard Gordeau with the help of submission that nearly choked the opponent fighter. UFC 1 referees were Helio Vigio and Joao Alberto Barreto who were seasoned referees of Brazil. In the earlier times, the matches of UFC were not considered as a competition between the fighters but were conducted to display several fighting techniques. The normal trend observed was that a particular fighter possessed a mastery of probably only one skill of Martial Arts. |
